Mashable recently posted an article about how brands can connect better with their customers and provide better customer service through their Facebook brand pages. While some companies take full advantage of the ability to directly connect with users on Facebook, unfortunately many companies do not. I found the article really interesting because I am currently designing a social media position for an event planning organization I am involved with at Hofstra and am trying to figure out the best way to create positive online brand presence for the organization. Here’s my take on my favorite tips from the article:

Create a human voice users can identify with:

The article suggested that rather than delete or ignore complaints on the brand’s Facebook page, use it as an opportunity to help solve the problem and create a positive image for your brand. I think this is important because when a customer feels that I company listens to their issues and suggestions, they are more likely to use their product. or service. The voice the company uses on the site should be approachable and authentic. It should feel that the person responding to posts is someone who cares and is a real person. This way customers can relate better with the brand.

Respond to positive comments, as well as negative:

While it is important to show that your company cares about its customers concerns, it is important to show that your company also appreciates positive feedback. The company will seem even more human and approachable when it shows it cares about its customers’ opinions, both good and bad.

Pinned posts:

A new feature to Facebook is the ability to “pin” posts to bring them to the top of the page. In the case of customer service, if an interaction with a customer’s problem ends in a solution, it will be helpful to other customers with similar problems if the answer can easily be found at the top of the page. This also helps lower the influx of similar questions.

Hopefully these tips will help make your brand create a positive and helpful image for itself.

My App Concept:

An organizational app for student organizations that helps to manage tasks, budgeting, scheduling, and planning.

How the app would work:

  • log in specific to organization
  • editable calendar of events & tasks
  • digital idea/brainstorm notebooks
  • contact manager
  • messaging system
  • task invite: opt in or out of tasks
  • synced task manager checklist
  • location awareness: google maps shows location of events and tasks
  • voice interaction: send messages and add tasks/events with voice commands
  • video capability: record video to upload to organization’s synced social media accounts (YouTube, Facebook, Tumblr, etc.)
  • photo capability: take photos to upload to organization’s synced social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, etc.); ability add photos to idea notebook & attach photos to events

Shana Schnur
Describe in your own words what it is you do.
I am a fashion and glamor photographer. I know that it seems self explanatory (in that I take pictures), but beyond that I work with wardrobe stylists, makeup artists, hair dressers and models in order to create and capture the images I envision. I take my inspiration from classic movies and vintage photography, blended with dramatic modern work and foreign cultures with an artistic twist.

Explain how you got to do what it is you do. In other words, how did you get to the point you are now in your career.
I have wanted to be a photographer since I was very little and got to play with my grandfathers cameras growing up. I went to school at the School of Visual Arts for photography in Manhattan and graduated in May 2010. I started my own photography company before I graduated, and am still working on building my business and my career. My favorite photographer was Richard Avedon and I aspire to do similar work.

Do you have any tips/advice for someone looking to work in a similar field?
If it wasn’t for school, I absolutely would not be where I am today. I learned so much about photography, fashion, lighting, the technology, and building a business and career. The field is really competitive, and you have to have drive, patience, and be focused. You have to stand out, which is difficult, but once you make your impact it’s always a pleasure to know that people enjoy your work.
